Design and Technology
Subject Overview
At Hill Avenue Academy Design and Technology develops children’s skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials, including food. The Design and Technology curriculum develops children’s curiosity, creativity and innovation, encouraging them to think about important issues and be able to explore today's ideas, create tomorrow’s inventions and solve the future’s problems.

When you think about it, virtually everything around us has been designed and engineered in some way. We want Design and Technology to be functional, with children designing and making products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. They are able to work through the process of development: identify; research; design; make and evaluate aiding transition into the world of work.
Advancing through the bespoke Design and Technology programmes of study will give children the opportunity to become autonomous problem-solvers, allowing them to make positive changes to their quality of life. The curriculum enables them to identify needs and demands and respond to these by developing ideas and eventually making products and systems.

They will combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues, as well as functions and industrial practices. The curriculum will ensure the children reflect on and evaluate present and past design and technology, its uses and its impacts. At Hill Avenue Academy, Design and Technology helps all children to become informed consumers and potential innovators.
